Are you a camp director, teacher, or homeschool mom looking for a new arts and crafts idea for your kids?  Or maybe you are a recreation director at a senior center or nursing home and could use a new project.  Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting and fun for all.

This glass case can be used, given as a gift, or converted into a necklace purse.

To make the glasses case, you will need the following simple materials:  a square of craft foam, plastic or large blunt needles, lanyard lace or thick yarn.  Cut two rectangles from the foam, each 3-1/2 inches (9 cm.) by 6 inches (15 cm.).  With a hole punch, make holes on three sides of each rectangle, leaving one short side unpunched.  Make the holes 1/2 inch apart and allow at least 1/4 inch between the hole and the edge of the craft foam.  The holes need to line up so that the two pieces can be laced together.  If you are preparing the craft for small children, you should make the holes yourself.  Otherwise, the crafters can do this step if you have enough pairs of hole punches.

At this point the crafters can cut decorative shapes from other colors of craft foam, or you can buy sets of ready-cut foam shapes.

If you are doing the craft at a special event, like vacation Bible school, choose shapes that echo the theme of the event.  For instance, if the Bible school or camp has a cowboy theme, find shapes that fit well, such as boots, cowboy hats, and stars.  Let the kids choose the shapes they like and glue on as desired.  You might also like to provide beads or sequins to glue on as well, especially if the crafters are a little older.

The next step in this arts and crafts idea is to thread the plastic needle with the yarn or lanyard lace.

Yarn might be a little easier to handle, but lanyard lace is shiny and attractive.  In a pinch, some teachers of small children use a bobby pin as a needle.  It is certainly a safe alternative.  Simply loop the yarn through the opening and use the open end of the bobby pin as if it were the point of the needle.  The children can now begin to lace the front and back of the glasses case together.

To turn this arts and crafts idea into a necklace purse, simply attach a piece of lanyard lace to each corner making a long handle.  Kids will enjoy using this case as a place to store secret notes and small objects.  If they’d rather, they can give the glasses case to a parent, grandparent, or friend who wears glasses.  Either way, this arts and crafts idea will be interesting for all.

How To Make Easter Theme Craft Refrigerator Magnets

Looking for an inexpensive Easter Craft idea for your next project? This craft project costs less than .75 cents per refrigerator magnet and takes less than 20 minutes to make.

Great Project for: Sunday School, Vocational Bible School, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, School Craft Projects, Birthday Parties, and Easter Parties.

Appropiate Age Group: 4 and up

Materials Needed:

Patterns: Easter Egg, Easter Bunny Head, Chick, Cross, Basket
*note* A great source for patterns are preschool aged coloring books

Child Safety Scissors
All Purpose White Tacky Glue
Wiggle Eyes
Markets
Magnets
Foam Sheets: White, Yellow, Tan, Pink, Light Brown, Blue, etc
Miscellaneous: beads, buttons, sequins, yellow feathers

For the purpose of this project, we will assume that you are using Easter Patterns cut from a childs coloring book in the following shapes: Easter Egg, Bunny Head, Chick, Cross and Easter Basket.

To turn the coloring page into a pattern: Cut out the pattern by cutting just outside the patterns shape.

Place the paper shape from the coloring book on the reverse side and place it onto a piece of foam and trace around it. Using safety scissors, cut out the pattern from the foam sheet by cutting on the traced line.

Now its time to decorate your shapes using markers, beads, buttons and sequins.

Ideas:

Easter Eggs: glue on beads, buttons and sequins in pretty wavy patterns. If you are working with older children, you can coat your foam egg with white crafters glue and let them sprinkle on colored glitter which also makes for a pretty magnet.

Easter Chick: glue on wiggle eyes and yellow feathers. Using a black marker draw on a nose and a mouth.

Easter Bunny Head: Using markers color in pink ears and a pink nose. Using a black marker add on wiskers and a mouth. Glue on wiggle eyes.

Cross: You can decorate them however you choose or have the children write a bible quote onto them using markers

Basket: Have the children draw designs onto their baskets. They can cut out small oval shapes in pastel colors and glue them onto the front of their baskets to make easter baskets.

After you are done decorating all your magnets, flip them over and glue a 2 inch piece of magnet on the back and let dry for approximately 20 minutes.

Now you are all done! Super easy to do and they work up quickly. A great inexpensive craft project for kids!

Fun and Easy Kid’s Craft Idea – How to Make Candles From Old Crayons

If your home is anything like mine, you’re constantly picking crayons up off the floor. My son colors everyday, sometimes for hours on end. He loves crayons. We’re always buying more crayons because he either looses them or they’ve been worn down to nubbins and hard to color with. Well, here’s a tip for you on what you can do with the worn out crayons rather than throwing them away. You can recycle the old crayons by making them into candles. You can show your kids how they can take something old and make it into something new and colorful that’s useful too. You’ll want to burn these darling homemade candles yourself and give them as gifts as well.

Use this craft technique as a teaching moment with your kids. Before you start making the candles, talk to your kids about safety. They’ll need to know that the crayons will have to be melted using a very high heat, and they will not be able to do that particular step in the process. Tell them they will have other fun steps in making crayon candles.

Get your supplies together. Along with about six crayons, you’ll need a wax container of some sort such as an empty milk or orange juice wax carton, one pound of paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, white packing string. If you’re hesitant to use your double boiler to melt the crayons and wax, an old coffee can and saucepan works great.

First, trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high. Next, cut the string at least 8 inches long and later cut the wick to fit the holder. Braid the three string pieces together to make a wick that burns easier. Melt the paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. To help it melt faster, cut it into small chunks. Usually you’ll need to allow about 20 minutes for the melting process to complete.

Get your kids involved with the crayon candle making fun by letting them remove the crayon wrappers from the crayons while the wax is melting. Be creative by mixing and matching the crayon colors to create your own pretty candle.

Most folks find that they get the best results if they wait and add the crayons to the wax after it’s totally melted. Use a pair of scissors and dip the string into the paraffin. Dipping the string will make sure it’s coated with paraffin because the ice cubes may make it hard for the wax to stick to the string. Hold the string so that it is in the middle of the carton and fill the carton with ice cubes. Pour wax mixture over the ice cubes. You can even add a touch of scent to your crayon candle by adding a little cinnamon or vanilla to the hot wax.

Once you have poured your candle, make sure your kids know the importance of leaving it alone to harden. The candle will usually set in about half an hour, but leave it alone for a couple of hours and until the ice is melted. Put the candle in an area that is safe and where it will not be bothered. Be sure the little ones know they could be burned if they touch the hot wax before it’s cooled. The wax can stay hot for hours after pouring and can be a potential hazard to kids and animals. When you’re ready, all you have to do then is pour off the melted water and then peel off the wax carton.

If you’re looking for a new and easy craft project to do with your kids or with a small group of kids, then making crayon candles is great idea. You can spend a fun afternoon with your children and make a useful candle for your home or as a gift for grandparents and friends.

Comparing the Three Dahle Craft Trimmers

If you are in need of a new rotary trimmer for personal use, you might want to take a look at Dahle craft trimmers. These trimmers are high-quality products that are great for all kinds of personal use, especially craft projects such as greeting cards, scrapbooks, and so on. Dahle manufactures three different craft trimming products: the Card Maker, the Trim Ruler, and the Personal Trimmer Kit. This article will compare and contrast these trimmers so you can decide which one would be right for you.

The Card Maker and Trim Ruler are two very similar gadgets that can help make crafting more enjoyable. Both of these rotary trimmers can trim items that are up to 13 inches long and they’re lightweight which makes transporting them easy. Both of these cutters have a self-healing cutting mat and they can trim up to three sheets of paper at a time. So while they’re not good for heavy-duty cutting, they are perfect for crafts. Each trimmer comes with three blades: one is straight and the other two are decorative. The Card Maker has deckle and scoring blades, whereas the Trim Ruler has a wavy blade, plus another blade that can perforate your paper. The blades are interchangeable and changing them is safe because they’re in a plastic case. Also, you can use Card Maker blades with a Trim Ruler and vice versa. This is great because it gives you a lot of cutting options so you can easily pick the right blade for your project. It’s easy to measure your item, too, because the mat has a measurement grid on it. These trimmers are available for $29.95 each, so they’re affordable even in this rough economic climate.

If you’re a hardcore crafter and need a little bit more in a rotary trimmer, the Dahle Personal Trimmer Kit could be what you’re looking for. This really is a kit in the true sense of the word, because it contains the Dahle Personal Rolling Trimmer 507, as well as several different blades. The 507 is one of Dahle’s premier products and it can cut items that are up to 12.5 inches long. It is lightweight and portable, and it has a self-healing cutting mat and a paper clamp that ensures an accurate cut. The blade is enclosed so you can’t hurt yourself, plus it’s self-sharpening and it can cut in any direction. The 507 can cut up to 7 sheets of paper at a time and you can trim lots of different types of paper with it, including bond paper and card stock. (You can also trim photos.) The mat has a sizing guide so you can determine where to cut your document. This trimmer is definitely made for people who need a high-quality personal rotary trimmer and it comes with four different blades: straight, wavy, deckle, and perforated, so it offers more cutting options than a single Card Maker or Trim Ruler unit. Naturally, the Personal Trimmer Kit is more expensive that the Card Maker or Trim Ruler, and it retails for $109.95. Yes, that’s a big difference, but consider the fact that you have more cutting options, plus the blades are self-sharpening, which can save you both time and money.

Overall, the product you choose should be the one that best fits your needs. The Card Maker and Trim Ruler are both affordable, great products, but they aren’t quite as durable as the trimmer in the Personal Trimmer Kit, nor do they offer as many blade options. Therefore, the Personal Trimmer Kit may be the better investment. But no matter which product you choose, since it’s made by Dahle, you can be confident you’re getting a great product. Good luck and happy crafting!

If you’re considering buying a Rotary Paper Trimmer or a guillotine cutter for your home, you should really check out MyBinding.com. They carry one of the largest selections of trimmers and cutters that you will find anywhere on the web. Plus, they carry the entire line of Dahle Guillotine Paper Cutters, cutting mats and paper handling equipment. Check it out for yourself today!
