Art and craft

Art and craft convey the inner feeling of the artist. Art is a talent which each person has to discover and it is the indication of the changing time, ideas, thoughts, science, technology and overall culture of the land concern. Craft, on the other hand, has much more to do with working with hands and involves skill, technique, and practice.

Wood carving could be defined as cutting and carving the wood in a desired way. Carving means design or cutting by chipping away at a surface. It is necessary to first identify the texture of wood before the process of carving is initiated. Wood used for carving can be classified into two kinds, namely, hardwood and softwood.

Hardwood -refers to wood that is obtained from deciduous broadleaved trees, which shed their leaves annually. Examples of hardwood trees are teak, oak, rosewood, sandalwood, walnut etc.

Softwood- it comes from trees bearing cones, most of which are evergreen. It is ideal for carving, since it is easy to cut, doesn’t splinter, glues well and is good for laminating. Softwood includes pine, cedar, and fir trees.

Wood carving Techniques

There are various techniques to carve wood. Wood carving may be broadly classified into four types:

Relief Carving: it is a type of wood carving that is basically a two dimensional carving, used for things like wall plaques and household decorations.
Chip Carving: it is one of the oldest and simplest types of wood carving. This is a method of literally removing chips from the wood to form a design or geometric pattern.  Chip carving is used to decorate many household items such as music boxes, spoons, hope chests, beams, borders and ceilings.

Carving in the Round: It is a three dimensional type of wood carving.  This type of wood carving opens the door to every tool you can imagine and any kind of wood.   Some of the more popular figures to carve are birds, people and fish.
Whittling: Whittling is the art of taking a piece of raw wood and carving it into shapes by using a knife.  It is reminiscent of a “simpler” time.

Carving Tools

A set of tools is extremely essential to carve wood into desired shapes and designs. The most common tools used by craftsmen to carve Wood:

Carving knives are basic carving tools. They are available in various shapes and sizes.
Chisels have a cutting edge, and are forced into the Wood to produce carved patterns. Square and skew are the two kinds of chisels.
Gouges are chisels with a partly cylindrical blade. They have curved cutting edges.
Rasps and files are used for detailed carving. They have separate conical teeth, and are excellent for shaping decoys.
Grinding Tools are also called Rotary tools, these are one of the most commonly used and preferred tools. Grinding tools should be used in ventilated areas as they generate a lot of dust.
V-tools are known as parting tools, have cutting edges in the shape of a ‘V’. V-tools are used to make sharp incisions and fine carving.

The wood carving helps to develop creativity and imagination by seeing the world around us and its tradition. The creative process itself gives us many aesthetic experiences and the final effect gives us a huge satisfaction.

Making Money With Arts & Crafts

As our economy continues to decline and rising unemployment rates continue to increase many Americans have been scrambling for alternatives to making some extra cash , but you are not alone! Many opportunists are well aware of your need and are quite willing to help you part with your hard earned money by offering over blown income claims.

You can protect your self by just doing a little research and using a little common sense.

Do you have a hobby? Most of us do! And if you are good at it, you can turn it into a money making opportunity! The Arts & Crafts industry contributes 10′s of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy every year and this may be your opportunity to grab a piece of the pie.

Let’s take Arts & Crafts as a fine example for making money! What I’m talking about is things you have made with your own hands using your imagination and skill.

When making money with Arts & Crafts you should consider a few things in your search such as what you are good at, what can you can do and what do you enjoy.

Everything sells and thousands of crafters and artist make a nice living doing what they enjoy. Artist and crafters all over the world sell candles, rugs, figures, pottery, quilts, photos, bird houses, soap and the list goes on and on.

So what can you make? I believe in doing what I say! So let me share with you a little story of how I make money with crafts. Now keep in mind I am in no way an artist or even a crafter!

I just know how to be creative and one day when I was at the Dollar store (You know everything for $1.00) I was looking at some little cowboy figures riding a horse about 8 inches tall. I talked to the lady at the counter and asked how many she had, she said she had 100 of them and after a little negotiation I got them for $0.72 cents each.

Now comes the creative stuff, on my way home I stopped off at a local saw mill and purchased some cedar log scraps and took them home. With a little sawing, sanding and some varnish I made 100 little wooden bases for my cowboys. After drying I epoxied my cowboys on their bases and hand signed each one with my name and date.

I had 8 sets of 12 different little cowboys along with a few duplicates and the following weekend I went to the flea market and set up shop. I sold my cowboys for $12.95 each and sold out that weekend.

I had about 20 Hours into this project, spent $72.00 on my cowboys, $18.00 on wood scrap, $15.00 in material and $35.00 for my space rent. My net profit for this project was $1,155.

I hope this gets your creative juices flowing on what you can do with Arts & Crafts.

You will find many of sources to sell your Arts & Crafts such as:

1. Online with Craigslist for free.

2. At flea markets.

3. Craft fairs.

To your success, Ozark Mike

Mosaic Glass Is Beautiful Tiles Used To Make Wonderful Crafts And Designs

Mosaic glass is beautiful tiles used to make wonderful crafts and designs. It became popular during the Ptolemaic period, used to make colorful patterns and art. Fused mosaic glass is used to create patterns that look like they are made out of marble. While the effect is the same, marble is much more expensive.

Bold patterns of art created with mosaic glass were common in the Empire period. The glass was used for walls and vaulted ceilings. Mosaic glass works wonderfully on ceilings because it reflects like so well. The Romans enjoyed using mosaic glass as well. It is well known in the early forms of their artistic cultures.

There are three techniques for using mosaic glass: the direct method, the indirect method, and the double indirect method. The direct method involves placing the mosaic glass directly on to a supporting surface. This is generally used in small projects such as creating vases and other crafts.

The indirect method works well for larger projects that have a repetitive pattern to them. These glass tiles are generally applied to an adhesive backing paper then transferred to the wall area, floor, or other surface. This is a time saver for large projects and it is easier than applying each glass mosaic one at a time.

The double indirect method is generally used when the work needs to be seen throughout the process. This is to ensure the design is correct prior to placing it on the project surface. This type of work is done is sections.

The more difficult glass mosaic patterns require some in depth mathematical calculations. If you use a book or internet source to choose a glass mosaic design, it will give you the necessary information regarding the number of each color of tile you will need to purchase. Otherwise, such calculations may be part of the process for you.

Today, mosaic glass can be purchased from quality craft supply stores and on the internet. Mosaic glass is used to decorate homes. It is very popular in bathrooms and entryways. It adds detail and flare to any home. Mosaic glass is a colorful and distinct way to add class to your home.

Christmas Crafts Projects For You and Your Kids

Christmas is among the best feasts of the year for your kids. In order to turn this feast into a real enjoyable activity, you simply have to teach your kids some uncomplicated Christmas crafts projects, so that the celebration is full of joy for you and for them!

As soon as a child helps you choose what the Christmas-projects will be, everything will flow just fine, because kids have better imagination than adults! However, have in mind that preschoolers typically need to be helped and guided, but that will be better, because you will have to assist in smaller crafts projects, right? As an example, you will only add sprinklings in addition to the styles of Christmas trees or adhesive ribbons on the wreaths.

Moreover, children who have already attended school, show the tendency of being more creative and will typically construct all crafts projects on their own. As usual, parents organize parties for smaller children with their neighbor’s kids. However, you have to consider that even older children, just about the age of nine, really enjoy socializing with other children at their age. Therefore, if you have kids at this age, you may perhaps want to organize a Christmas-craft meeting together with your kid’s friends or neighbors.

One of the additional extras for the Christmas-projects may be a customized Xmas card. Everything you actually need would be a piece of cellophane, a constructing paper list, and a few extra materials for the designing style of the card. When you start, you need to assist your kid fold the cellophane and the construction paper to the required size.

So, now just let them design the card in the means they need and offer them basic materials like crayons or colored markers. If you wish to give them some inspiration, show some typical Xmas characters, such as Santa Claus, snowmen, the Rudolph deer, Xmas-trees etc.

As soon as you have completed these Christmas crafts projects, help your kids write his or her Xmas-message that they would like inside the Christmas card. In conclusion, that way, your kids will be ready to take these cards to the post and to send letters to the family and their friends!

You can always find wonderful and Free Kid Crafts at this website. With Christmas around the corner, you can check out for Little Kids Craft and other gift ideas here.
