Most of us know the usual ways for kids to make money, which include lemonade stands, newspaper routes and mowing lawns. However, there are more unusual ways. Some of the ways listed below are from my own childhood, when I was always looking for another way to make money.

1. Be a chef. At about eleven years old, I used to sell meals to my brothers (I had four of them). I got 25 cents for scrambled eggs or a sandwich, and more for more complicated meals. My brothers preferred to stay in front of the TV and let me cook for them. Since the food was already provided by my parents, the income was pure profit.

2. Computer whiz-kid service. Many young kids know a lot about computers. My nephew was getting paid for programming by the the time he was fourteen, but even younger kids can show old folks how to use a computer and the internet for a fee. Learn a few more skills, and they can even set up computers for new owners who are using them for the first time. Letting grandparents spread the word would be a good marketing ploy.

3. Household carnival. I charged my brothers five cents for a wadded up piece of paper selected from a bucket full of them. Most had a penny or two inside them, but a few had a quarter. It was just one of my “carnival” events. I also had them throwing pennies at a bowl across the room, which I kept, of course. If a penny stayed in the bowl they won a dime. 4. Collect returnables. We collected and returned cans and bottles for a deposit as kids. Now that more states have return laws, it’s an even better way to make a little cash. During the Cherry Festival, when I lived in Traverse City, Michigan, adults came to town just to collect the cans that people threw all over. With a 10 cent deposit, they were collecting more than $100 worth per day according to several of them. If the kids wear gloves, leave broken cans and bottles alone, and use hand sanitizer, this is a safe way to make money.

5. Personal services menu. If there are many people in the family, a great way for kids to make money is to sell their services. They can make a menu of things they’ll do and how much they charge for each. It might include washing windows for 50 cents each, for example, and maybe $1.50 to walk a dog. If the list is copied, it could be handed out to all relatives and possibly neighbors too.

6. Rummage sales and flea markets. If parents agree, kids can have rummage sales, selling not just household things, but arts and crafts and refreshments too. Parents might even take their kids to a flea market to set up a stand. I sold (as an adult) more than $1,000 of hand-made walking sticks one summer, while my wife sold hundreds of dollars worth in pewter figurines glued to rocks, sea shells and crystals. If you want to start a home based craft business, but are terrified of selling in public or dealing with people, or exchanging money, then you would have had problems a decade ago.

Bu with the advances in the internet, you can actually design, create and even get supplies as well as sell online, and still be in your pajamas if you so wish! 1. If you like the idea of local craft shows, you can pair up with another crafter. Preferably one that creates something totally different from you, so as not to be competing, and help pay for the show fee, and have her/him sell your creations for you. You could give them a fee or commission. This would have to be someone you trust.

2. If your creations are easily mailed, or you can come up with some great craft ideas, that could be easily dropped in the mail, then consider Ebay, or other online stores. All you will need is a good camera, and be able to write a great description of your craft, and price it well, and research the postal fees up front. People like to know what their total cost for a product will be right from the beginning. You could advertise that you offer free shipping, depending on the size and price of your product.

If you love all aspects of a home business.. no boss, make your own hours, let your creativity go free, make some extra money.. then don’t let anything stop you. Watch the items that aren’t selling. Is it over priced? Can you make it cheaper and still make a profit? You could probably sell a bunch of just about anything if you charge less than it costs to make. A lot of people do just that without realizing it.

Keep your costs down.

I’ve pointed this article toward small woodworking items using free patterns on purpose. It’s the best way to start making money. These smaller items are easier to sell at craft shows, to neighbors, and dozens of other places. Trying to sell larger items without a lot of expense is a very hard way to get started. Besides, after people see your smaller items and your woodworking skills, those larger items will come to you.

Look for easy to make projects that costs very little to make. A project that requires a lot of expensive hardware or a half dozen colors of expensive paint will probably not be very profitable. You should pick items that you can make easily with the tools and machines that you already have. Also, projects that require a lot of time consuming machine set-ups could be a profit killer.

You also have to be selective with the smaller items. Are you trying to duplicate the same imported item you saw in a store? Sorry, no market there. Maybe you can improve it and be able to sell it for a profit. Always keep an eye out for new items, something your potential customers have never seen before.

Give your customer the best you have. Remember, this same customer is the future customer that remembers you by how she was treated, your professional image, and the quality of the item she bought. You’ll also be the one she remembers when she’s ready for those larger items.
