Things to Do in the Summer (for Kids)

Tired of seeing your kids look bored and inactive during their summer holidays? Have you wondered but didn’t find the ultimate solution to their month long vacation blues? Well, just spend some time in thinking out of the box and Viola! You have struck upon a brilliant plan! Something that won’t burn a hole in your pocket but at the same time will give them enough pleasure and enjoyment.

Growing kids need to expend their infinite reserves of energy on something. Sitting like a couch potato in front of the TV all day long doesn’t provide them adequate exercise or entertainment. Eventually they end up piling loads of fat and becoming obese. To better the situation, you can bring out that makeshift plastic swimming pool, fill it water, purchase some water guns and balloons and let them a ball! Be sure to include some water toys and tubes to help them remain afloat during their games in the pool. And also keep on hand some medicines and first aid, lest some evil might befall on your kids.

Encouraging you child to do some craftwork would be a nice and simple idea. Kids love to exercise their creative faculties and if it could be focused on doing something constructive-like a dolphin out of paper, their happiness knows no bounds. Craft art books, guides, videos are not available at your local bookstore but you can stumble upon some brilliant tricks off the internet.

Gardening helps nurture your kids love for nature and inculcate in them a respect for all living creature. An exercise of watching a plant grow, something that you probably experienced as your toddler grew up will thrill and fascinate him.

All children love to watch games being played. IF a baseball team is in town, take your kids out to watch the match and indulge in their fun. Actively support teams, and take part in your child’s enjoyment.

Most school going students develop a dislike towards reading books. What you can do is you can sit down with and read out o them a popular short story. If you see they are getting bored, enact out parts of story to make them feel the action come alive. Better still, if you can lay your hands on the film adaptation of the story. That way they will be encouraged to analyze the differences between the story and the film. For starters, you can use Harry Potter or Eragon or the His Dark Materials trilogy. Kids just adore the genre of fantasy.

Get hold of some board games like Monopoly or Scotland Yard where the whole family can take part. A group involvement will up the thrill quotient of the game and that way everyone will feel refreshed and happy. Some games like scrabble might even help you and your kids’ o enrich his vocabulary.

Going out for movies is a superb alternative. Don’t forget to get the pop corn and Pepsi and during intervals, you can even entertain them with your humorous observation of the film.

Sometimes taking your id along to the workplace will inculcate in them a feel of being involved and knowing what daddy or mommy does all day. But before you do that, consult your boss and get to know whether bringing your child to the workplace is allowed.

Overall, there are a million ways to spice up the lives of your children during the summer vacation rather than allow them to become bored.

Keeping the Kids Entertained Through Summer With Outdoor Toys

When the kids are at home throughout the summer, you may be wondering how you can keep them entertained. The great thing about summer time is that the weather is nice and it gives kids the opportunity to play outdoors. One way that you can keep them entertained is to purchase some nice outdoor toys that the kids can play with this summer. They’ll enjoy themselves and you won’t have to worry about trying to entertain them every few minutes. Here is a look at a few great outdoor toys that you may want to purchase for your children.

Swing Sets
If you want your kids to have a great time outdoors this summer, one way that you can entertain them is with a nice swing set. There are all different kinds of swing set systems that are available today. You can find some that only offer the swings, while there are others that offer slides for kids to play on as well. Some sets have multiple slides, some even come with mini play houses attached to them. The swing set you choose will probably depend on the number of kids you have as well as the money you have to spend on the set.

Sandpits
Kids love playing in the dirt. Why not get them a nice sandpit that they can enjoy. Sandpits are relatively inexpensive to purchase and your kids can have hours of fun in the backyard. There are sandpits that come in cool shapes, such as in the shape of a turtle. Some sand pits are actually off the ground and covered with umbrellas to make sure your kids don’t get to much sun while they are enjoying their time playing in the dirt. The sand usually isn’t very expensive either, and you can purchase a few buckets and shovels, and your kids are set for hours of fun outdoors.

Climbing Sets
Climbing sets are another type of outdoor toy that many kids enjoy. Do you have kids that love to climb all over the place, why not purchase them a climbing set for the backyard. Usually these sets come with bars to climb across, swinging bars to swing and climb on, and more. Just make sure that kids are careful when they use this equipment. It may be a good idea for you to watch them to make sure they are safe.

Water Toys
Water toys for the outdoors are a huge hit with kids during the summer time. There are all kinds of different toys that use water. Consider some fun water guns for kids to play with. Small pools can be fun, and there are even fun sprinkler systems for kids that can be used right in the backyard. It is a wonderful way for them to cool off and enjoy themselves.

If you are going to purchase these toys for your children to enjoy this summer, try purchasing online. You can find many great deals online and it’s easy to shop too. It allows you to carefully look through the toys available to find the best ones for your kids and the best prices as well.

Projects Abroad Sponsor Orphans to Attend Diverse Summer School in Mexico!

Projects Abroad are delighted to have supported ICTC this summer to bring a hugely successful summer course to the children of low-income families. Support for the project in the Mexican town of Cd. Guzman came in the form of financial help through sponsorship of pupils and volunteers lending their time to teach.

ICTC (International Cambridge Training Centre) organised a summer school course for young children between the ages of 6 to 12 years old. The Institute which normally specialises in providing English tuition for all ages hosted a course of activities which covered arts & crafts, drama, computing sports as well as English lessons. The initial response for the course was overwhelming, 50 children immediately applied to take part.

The first aim of the institute’s work is to provide good quality English lessons and so Projects Abroad were more than happy to arrange for our volunteers to assist the local Mexican teachers. The teachers were able to focus on the grammar side of things. The volunteers meanwhile with their skill of being native English speakers focused on the conversational side and how the language actually works in practice. With everyone participating and playing to their strengths all the pupils received a really enjoyable and well rounded curriculum.

Furthermore, the institute does its utmost to create programmes which integrate an element of community service in its work. With that in mind Projects Abroad worked with them to sponsor 10 children from very low income families to participate in the course. The orphans chosen were from the DIF (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) a government department which carries out a lot of a lot of social care work in local communities.

One of the highlights of the project was undoubtedly the closing ceremony. The students all performed a series of four plays in English. The enthusiasm from both the volunteers and students was quite evident to everyone watching and was a sight to behold. The students put on a seamless performance and were thoroughly deserving of the diplomas they were presented with at the end of the course.

Projects Abroad would like to thank everyone involved but especially Vanessa Reufsteck, Verena Linke and Kate Turner who selflessly dedicated their time, effort and commitment to make the project so successful. We are sure that they must be as pleased with the results of their hard work as everyone else is.

Budget Friendly Kids Summer Holiday Activities

If you’re keen to keep your kids occupied and entertained on a budget this school holidays and summer, your search is over!  Here are some budget friendly activities that your children will love.

Game Time!

Your children have probably got loads of games and toys that they haven’t played with in a while.  You’ll no doubt find classics like Twister, Hungry Hippos, Monopoly, Scrabble and UNO hidden away and there’s hours of fun to be found in simple games!

Kid Friendly Exercise and Fresh Air

Trampolines, skipping ropes, hopscotch and badminton sets are all great for keeping the kids entertained, all while getting some fresh air and exercising.  It won’t cost a lot, and your kids will get hours of enjoyment from playing in the garden.

Swimming is another great option for keeping the kids busy while maintaining a budget. You might find that your local leisure centre or swimming pool has special deals for children during the summer, or that there are other activities available that they’ll enjoy.  Swimming is also a healthy activity (and they won’t even know it’s good for them!)

Picnics are the perfect way to get out of the house and enjoy the summer sun. Just be sure to slip, slop, slap as it’s easy to get burnt even on a day that’s overcast.  Every town or city has a park – take a walk there to play on the swings or simply sit and watch the world go by?

Learning is Fun

Library’s have fantastic holiday programs that are either free or cost next to nothing.  This will encourage your kids to read, and you can even borrow books yourself, so that both you and your children can read together. There are often different activities happening over the school holidays such as arts and crafts and storytelling that your children can join in with.

Movie Time!

Why not invite some other Mum’s and their kids around for a DVD showing.  It will keep the children entertained and you can have healthy snacks ready for everyone throughout the movie like carrot sticks and dips, popcorn and sultanas and nuts.

Family Getaway

Take a family trip.  It’s the perfect opportunity to take a break, enjoy your family’s company and really relax.  Be sure to have up-to-date travel and car insurance though, as your budget could well and truly blow out if you have an unexpected car accident or someone loses the camera or portable DVD player.

Summer Crafts And Your Kids

When boredom looms and the weather’s hot, get everyone involved in summer crafts for kids.  Kids are always excited to be free from the school routine when they are let out for summer break, but it isn’t long until they start wondering what to do.  Summer crafts for kids will keep them occupied and maybe even teach them a thing or two.

In summer, crafts for kids can involve found objects, like seed pods, grasses, and similar objects.  Let kids create nature collection collages by gluing these items to a stiff piece of cardboard.   Help them spray paint some of the findings with silver or gold paint.  Alternatively, they might like to glue glitter to some of the findings.  Perhaps they would also enjoy collecting wild flower seed heads and creating dried flower arrangements.   Arrange the bouquet in a homemade vase.

A vase for summer bouquets, fresh or dried, is another craft that naturally fits into the summer crafts for kids category.  A simple vase can be made from a tin can.  Soup cans work particularly well because they are smooth on the outside and rather narrow.  Be sure to file off any sharp spurs on the inside opening.  Start the work of art by cutting a piece of construction paper or other colored paper to fit around the sides of the can.  This will be glued to the outside of the can, but first it needs to be decorated.

The vase cover can be decorated in many ways.  The child can draw a summer scene on the paper and then decorate it with glued on glitter or small stickers of summer things.  Another idea is for the child to write their name in large letters, and glue beans, seeds, or glitter to the letters.  Let all glue dry before attaching the paper to the outside of the can.  Add water and fresh flowers or leave dry for dry flowers.

You can also use the can for a trinket container or a place to put pens, pencils, and markers.  To make them real summer crafts for kids, glue grass seed heads and found seed pods to the paper in a decorative way.

Jar vases make good summer crafts for kids, too.  Canning jars make particularly cute vases, but any cast off mayonnaise, pickle, or other jar, even plastic ones, can work, too.  To make a jar into a vase it first needs to be sparkling clean.  Kids love getting wet in the summer, so let them roll up their sleeves (or put on a bathing suit!) and have fun splashing at the sink while “washing dishes.”  When the jar is clean and dry, tie an attractive ribbon around the opening.  If desired, decorate the outside of the jar with glued on beads and buttons.

Summer crafts for kids will provide some cute decorations around the home and keep the kids from being bored.  This summer, crafts for kids should be at the top of every parent’s To Do list!
