Need ideas on how to build a small scale self propelled boat for a school project.?

Can use any materials such as plastic bottles, craft sticks, balloons, foam, wood, rubber bands, tape, cardboard, plastic propellers. I need help with how to propell the boat more than with the design.

In high school I made a paper-mache canoe. I even floated in it, inside the pool. They almost killed the teacher for that – didn’t touch me. I got into my projects.
A self propelled boat = make a lightweight boat out of balsa wood. Build a paddlewheel and wind it up with a rubber band, so that when you release it, it will go a little way.

WE USED TO MAKE BOATS WITH A PAPER CLIP AND A RUBBERBAND
BY WINDING THE BAND TIGHT AND RELEASE THE TENSION THE BOAT WOULD GO

I don’t know if you can use the idea in your project but do a Google search for "pop pop boats."
    They’re good fun.
